## Guessing from the last WhatsApp job will underprice you

Most independent designers, developers, writers, and producers in Egypt and the Gulf still price the next job from the last one: “last time they paid X, so this is X plus a bit.” That number had no relationship to rent, tax, tools, unpaid revisions, or the hours you cannot bill because you were writing proposals. It also had no relationship to what similar work tends to pay in your market. You end up defending a feeling.

A rate you can defend has two layers that must not be mixed up. The floor is what you need this month so the work is not a hobby. The band is what comparable work often pays, from sources you can name. You send a number at or above the floor. You use the band to decide whether the brief is cheap, fair, or a stretch — and to answer “why so much?” without inventing Glassdoor screenshots.

## Build the cost floor first

Write the take-home you actually need this month — rent, food, health, debt, a little savings — in the currency you live in. That is not “what I wish I earned.” It is the number that, if you miss it three months in a row, you take a job you hate.

Qufy’s calculator does this: take-home × 1.15 (a load for tax, software, and a thin buffer), divided by hours you can give the work each week × 4.33 weeks × a billable share. ## Then check a market band — and know where it came from

A floor can sit above what buyers in your niche usually pay. That is information, not a moral failure. Either you raise the offer (better clients, tighter scope) or you change costs. What you should not do is silently go below the floor because a stranger on a group chat said “designers here take 200.”

Qufy uses one method per country for every profession, and every band names its source. International / U.S. uses US BLS occupation pay. ## Pick a currency and keep it

If you live on EGP and a client pays USD, pick one currency for the quote and the invoice. Mixing “about five thousand” in two currencies is how both of you feel cheated when the transfer lands. State who pays transfer fees. If the job is long, say whether the fee is fixed in that currency or can be revisited if the rate moves a lot — that sentence belongs in the contract, not a later voice note.

## Say the number in one message the client can forward

Clients do not need utilization math. They need four lines: what you will deliver, how long you think it takes, the fee and currency, and what is out of scope. Calculate on the rate page, copy the client message, then turn it into a quote they can accept on a link. A screenshot of the calculator is not a quote — it gets cropped and argued with.

## Mistakes that look fast and cost a quarter

Pricing “to win the conversation” by going 40% under the floor does not create a loyal client. It creates a client who will expect that number next time, plus extra rounds, because you already showed the work was cheap. Pricing a huge brand job at your interior-design-for-a-cousin rate does the opposite damage: you train serious buyers that you are not in their market.

- Do not add unpaid “small extras” that were never on the quote.
- Do not skip the contract because the rate felt friendly.

## A worked example (numbers you can replace)

Suppose you need EGP 40,000 take-home, you can give the work 30 hours a week, and you leave utilization at 65%. Available hours are 30 × 4.33 ≈ 130. Billable hours ≈ 84. Floor ≈ (40,000 × 1.15) / 84 ≈ EGP 550/hour before you look at a band. If the overlay for your profession sits lower, that is a signal about the market — not permission to quote EGP 200 and hope. If it sits higher, you can send a number above the floor and still be inside a cited range.

Replace 40,000 with your real month. Replace 30 with hours you will actually protect. The calculator on /rate does the arithmetic so you do not rebuild it in a Notes app every Sunday.

## FAQ

### What is a good freelance hourly rate in Egypt or the Gulf?

There is no single good number. Start from the income you must take home, convert it to a floor with billable hours, then compare that floor to a regional band when one exists. Qufy shows the band only when country and profession match a cited source. If the band is below your floor, you still need the floor or the month does not close.

### Should I copy a US or Western Europe rate?

Not as a raw dollar on a Cairo or Riyadh invoice. Living costs, tax, and what buyers expect are different. In Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, Qufy scales US pay by how local developer pay compares with US developer pay, and labels the result a Qufy estimate. It never pastes the dollar figure.

### Hourly, day rate, or project fee?

Use hourly when the brief will move. Use a day rate (Qufy treats a billed day as about 6 invoiceable hours, not 8) when the client thinks in days. Use a project fee when deliverables are named — then add contingency for small changes and extra revision rounds.
